Shipping Products Securely

When selecting the right packaging for your products to be shipped in, whether shipping internationally or domestically there are many factors to consider in order to ensure your products arrive at their destination safely and securely.

Selecting a well designed solution suitable for the job you need it to do will ultimately save you money against repairs and replacements however an over engineered solution could cost more than you need to spend.

Shipping Method

Firstly consider how your products will be shipped and how many times they will be shipped. For example, will your products ship domestically in company owned vehicles, or internationally with multiple couriers and multiple transportation types? Is it a single trip or will the product be sent back and forth to various destinations? Will the case, crate, container or otherwise need to be strapped down to avoid movement in transit? This will help to define how much of a rigorous journey or journeys your products will need to take and as a result determine the specification and how heavy duty the packaging that they are shipped in needs to be. For example, a custom fabricated metal shipping container, a flight case, or a lightweight plastic case? For larger quantity requirements you may wish to consider a custom designed moulded solution!

Product Housing

Another factor to consider is how your product or products should be contained within the packaging. Can multiple products be bundled together, or should each product be self contained and if so, how are they held in place? There are a wide variety of solutions for this including strapping, plastic vacuum formed inserts or custom foam inserts that can vary in density depending on the weight and fragility of the product being packaged.

Handling & Logistics

It’s also important to think about handling during the shipping process. Its important that the products can be loaded and unloaded safely and as easily as possible dependent on the weight of the items being shipped, and that the logistics of the items is not made more difficult and expensive by their packaging. For example, we need to consider whether the receiver of the goods has the use of a forklift as well as the sender or whether the packaging needs to be handled by hand and pushed across a warehouse on castors.

Storage & Handling

Environmental Considerations

As with any packaging whether it be for use on a supermarket shelf or industrial logistics it is important to ensure that the packaging used is either reusable or as recyclable as possible. Wood, metals and most plastics can be recycled but the use of glues etc may limit the possibilities for recycling. In addition, many country’s have policies that may restrict or limit the import of certain material types.

If you are shipping products such as lithium ion batteries, it is vital to consider the need to package them in order to prevent leaks when under pressure or when exposed to vibrations in transit.

Image & Branding

In most scenarios packaging for the purposes of shipping goes along the lines of function over form, however this doesn’t always need to be the case…. (excuse the pun). Your casing solution can be specified in a specific colour and with your company or product branding front and centre to act as a marketing tool as well as shipping protection.
