Flight Case FAQs

What are flight cases?

Flight cases are reinforced, reusable shipping crates that are designed for the safe storage and transportation of high-value, heavy or fragile goods. The sturdy design of a flight case can incorporate a range of features, including wheels for easy movement and loading, latches and locks for added security, and interior foam for customised support.

Who can benefit from using a flight case?

Flight cases can be used to safely transport all types of sensitive or high-value equipment, including electronic, computer, audio-visual, lighting, rigging, tools, and photography or exhibition equipment. At Trifibre, we manufacture and supply flight cases to customers in the following industries:

What are flight cases made from?

Trifibre flight cases are typically made from phenol-coated birch plywood (also known as hexaboard), or laminated birch plywood which allows for a wide range of colours and finishes. Another common material is astraboard, which is a plastic sheet with a honeycomb core, designed to reduce weight while maintaining strength and durability. Flight cases are reinforced with steel corners and aluminium extrusions to improve their durability.

  • Hexaboard has a rigid, hard-wearing finish that means it’s more resilient, and able to cope with heavier weights and greater impact than other materials. Hexaboard also provides protection from moisture, and it’s cost-effective and eco-friendly.

  • Astraboard is used for more lightweight flight cases, as a plastic alternative that benefits from a polypropylene sandwich construction. Astraboard is therefore an ideal solution where weight and manoeuvrability are key considerations.

The exterior features of Trifibre flight boxes are finished with heavy duty fixtures and fittings, designed for maximum usability. This includes steel corners, combined with aluminium extrusions to protect the flight case from bumps and knocks during transit. Meanwhile, recessed steel carry handles provide long-term durability and help to streamline storage.

Flight cases also feature internal high-density foam padding to provide customised support and prevent the movement of equipment during transportation.

Are flight cases waterproof?

Not all flight cases are water resistant, with many being made from plywood which can swell or warp when submerged. At Trifibre, we can create flight cases to moisture resistant specifications, which may include using materials like hexaboard, and applying an internal seal around the extrusions and corners of your flight box to increase its water resistance further. We also stock a collection of fully waterproof cases, many of which are IP67 rated, drop-tested, and resistant to corrosion.

How are Trifibre flight cases made?

Trifibre flight cases are designed using the latest CAD technology and routed using precision CNC routing to ensure quality and precision throughout the manufacturing process:

  1. Solidworks 3D CAD is used to design our flight cases
  2. The flight case’s panels are cut using CNC precision routing via a Biesse CNC routing machine
  3. CNC routing is used to cut custom foam inserts for each flight case to ensure a precise finish
  4. Each flight case is handmade in our factory following a precise preparation process
  5. An Addison CNC double mitre saw accurately cuts aluminium extrusions to finish the flight box
  6. Logos or graphics can then be added using UV or screen printing
